Alice M. Strong

June 29, 1918 - April 20, 2017

Service Date:

A celebration of her life will be held on Long Island in May 2017.

Alice M. Strong of Long Island, New York passed away November 6, 2016 in Sanford Maine due to natural causes at age 98. The last three years of Alice’s life she lived with her son and daughter-in-law in Lyman, Maine and her final year at Newton Center in Sanford Maine. She was very well cared for and comfortable in her final years.

Alice (“Alice Ella Maria Maderner”) was born in New York City on June 29, 1918, the daughter of Vincent Paul and Laura (Neuman) Maderner, both immigrants from Austria. She was raised in New York City with her sister Hertha. She attended Julia Richman High School in Manhattan.

She married William Strong (who passed away in 1995) on June 17, 1939 and lived in New York City until 1952 when she and her family moved to West Hempstead on Long Island. She resided there until 1992 when she and Bill moved to the Dominican Village retirement home in Amityville where she lived until she moved in with her family in November 2013.

Alice had two children, Paul (a resident of Lyman, Maine) and Margaret (of Mt. Sinai NY, who passed away in 2014). She is survived by 6 grandchildren: Tara Connolly-Sherron of Holtsville, NY; Daniel Strong of Chicago, Il.; Kathryn Strong of Leesburg, VA; Kristin Connolly-McCullough of Rockville, Md.; David Strong of Fairport, NY; and Virginia Strong of Philadelphia, PA.

She is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren: Ashlyn and Cameron McCullough (Rockville, Md.); Vivienne Strong (Fairport, NY) and Xavier Hume (Philadelphia, PA.).

Alice was a wonderful wife, mother and friend to many. While raising her family she spent a 30-year career as Secretary of George Washington School in West Hempstead, NY. She was one of the first residents of Dominican Village, very active on many of their groups and committees, and one of the main architects of a beautiful rose garden there. She mystified her family as to how she transitioned from her name on her birth certificate, “Ella Maria Maderner” to Alice Marie.

Autumn Green Funeral Home in Alfred, Maine has respectfully handled arrangements. A celebration of her life will be held on Long Island in May 2017 and her cremains will be placed at Holy Rood cemetery in Westbury, NY to accompany those of her loving husband William.
