A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Maplewood Cemetery with a reception to follow at the West Newfield United Church of Christ on Maplewood Road. Rev. Shelly Snow will officiate.
Shirley West Moriarty, 87, died peacefully on October 3, 2017 at her home in West Newfield, Maine.
Shirley was born in Brockton, Massachusetts on December 3, 1929, the daughter of Charles Gilbert West and Lois Penniman Vinton.
She was raised in Braintree, Massachusetts and attended school there where she was a cheerleader, Captain of the tennis team and played field hockey. She later graduated from Boston-Bouvé College, affiliate of Tufts University where she was an alternate on a National field hockey team. Shirley received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy and was employed as a physical therapist at St. Joseph’s Infirmary, Mass General Hospital and finally Winchester Hospital.
She married Jack on September 27, 1952 in Fort Knox, Kentucky where he was stationed in the Army. Together they raised their family in Reading, Massachusetts prior to retiring to their home in Maine. In retirement, Shirley was very active in her church, Women’s Fellowship, historical society, library and book clubs. Her love of fitness and sports continued well in to her later years.
Being an avid field hockey player, she even continued to act as a coach for her granddaughters’ elementary school teams until she was 80 years old. She also had a passion for refinishing furniture, painting and working on other household projects. Her talents were many.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, John “Jack” Weant Moriaty; her daughters, Nancy Sugiura, Jane Johnson, Judy Cote; her sons, Stephen Moriarty and Bruce Moriarty; her 15 grandchildren: Yoko, Margaret, HeungSun, HyunSook, Felicia, Ian, Selina, MaryBeth, Dylan, Kyle, Emily, Hillary, Thomas, Natalie, and Sarah; and also four great grandchildren. Shirley is also survived by her brothers, David West and Peter West and several cousins.
