Dallas Reed Knight, 90, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, died Friday morning, February 9, 2018 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.

Dallas was born on December 5, 1927 in Quincy, Massachusetts, the son of Edward W. and Bessie (Reed) Knight of Weymouth, Mass. He served in the U.S. Army Japanese Occupation in 1945. He was a graduate of Weymouth High School and the University of Maine in Mechanical Engineering. Dallas married his campus sweetheart, Eleanor Thomas in 1954 and they enjoyed 63 years of life together, raising their family in Beverly and Norfolk, Massachusetts.

Dallas was employed by United Shoe Machinery Corporation of Beverly, and during that time was involved with design and testing military equipment for the Department of Defense, as well as design work for the Fastener Division of the Corporation. In 1971, Dallas started work with what is now known as FM Global in Norwood, Massachusetts in the Approvals Division Fuels Section where he examined and tested fuels to FM and ANSI Standards. He later became Manager of the Fuels Section, and also wrote a standard for flammable liquid storage cabinets. He is a life member of the National Fire Protection Association.

Dallas retired in 1990 and began building a model railroad, an ongoing project as a true rail fan. In 1994, He and Eleanor moved to Sanford. It was here he volunteered at the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad as guide, conductor and ticket seller, and later as a host on the Downeaster train. He and Eleanor loved to travel, visiting all 50 states as well as twelve Canadian Provinces, eight European countries and several Caribbean Islands. Other retirement activities were bridge, golf, Shaker Valley Square Dance and 470 Railroad Clubs. Dallas was a member of the Goodwin Mills United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Eleanor, two daughters and two sons, Susan Gavett and husband Stephen of Scarborough; Dallas, Jr. and wife Mary of Plainville, Mass; Patricia Burch of Beverly, Mass; Thomas and wife Suzanne of Westbrook; as well as four grandchildren, Stephanie Gavett Beck and husband Jeff, Jeffrey Gavett and wife Celia, Gregory Knight and Jason Knight; also two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Addie Beck, his brother, Edward and sister-in-law, Joyce of Monmouth; and many nieces and nephews.

Dallas was predeceased by his sister, Priscilla Liset, formerly of Weymouth and Sandwich, Mass.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak St., in Alfred, with Rev. Ed Bove, officiating.
