Rachel S. Alley, 93, a longtime resident of Waterboro, died peacefully on March 5, 2018 at the Newton Center in Sanford.

Rachel was born on November 11, 1924 in Benton, the daughter of Henry E. and Ruth W. (Crosby) Spaulding.

Rachel met her future husband, Frank Alley, working on a farm in Albion, while she worked in the kitchen, cooking homemade meals for the workers. On April 14, 1946, Rachel married Frank and they soon made their way to the Sanford/ Springvale area. Frank worked at the Shaw’s Ridge Farm for over 27 years and Rachel stayed home to care for their two children, Janet and Eugene. Rachel was active within the Maine State Grange and the Rebekah Lodge in Sanford; she was a dedicated member for over 50 plus years. She also was active in the Cub Scouts and 4-H programs when her children were younger.

Rachel moved to Waterboro in the early 1980’s, where she became a proud home owner! Her home became a safe haven for many children in the area. Rachel nurtured and cared for several youngsters in her home. She loved visitors and could whip up a meal in no time to feed her guests. Each year she planted a large vegetable garden and shared her bountiful harvest with her family and friends. Her yard had many bird feeders and Rachel was content living on her own.

Rachel had many friends within her church family and will be remembered for being a kind and gracious woman. She lived her faith daily and many of the area children have been loved and encouraged by such a strong and sweet woman. Rachel will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.

She is survived by her son, Eugene W. Alley and wife Joan of Sanford; six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Rachel was predeceased by her husband, Frank and by her daughter, Janet L. Jackson; and by her brothers and sisters, Catherine O. Owen, Lloyd R. Spaulding, Carlton C. Spaulding, Kenneth L. Spaulding, Malcolm R. Spaulding, Clyde M. Spaulding and Laura H. Young.
