James R. Flaherty, 72, a longtime resident and businessman in Alfred, died peacefully at his home, with his family by his side on July 18, 2018.
James was born on February 6, 1946 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the son of John and Mildred (Haskell) Flaherty. Her grew in Massachusetts and was a graduate of Billerica Memorial High School. It was during his early years he became known as JR to family and friends.
On June 6, 1970, JR married his sweetheart, Genevieve Doughty, and they began their family of four sons in Lowell, Massachusetts. JR worked as a security guard and progressed up through the ranks to become head of security at the YMCA in Lowell. For many years, Genevieve worked second shift at the Y as a secretary and JR would bring the kids in at 11:00 – Gen took the kids home and became Mom again while JR worked the night shift.
Both JR and Gen wanted to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city and moved their family to Maine in 1985. This is the beginning of their successful business, JR Towing and Auto Sales on Jordan Springs Road in Alfred. They were a team, Gen, kept the books and JR gained the trust and respect of many; including the State Police, York County Sheriff’s and the Sanford Police Department. He responded quickly and was professional in all areas. He was very proud of their business and enjoyed restoring antique automobiles, especially his ’55 Packard.
Running a business 24/7 left precious time with his family. But, he and Gen always took a vacation in the fall. They went to one of their favorite get-a-ways, Branson, Missouri. He loved classic country music and Gen loved to see the early Christmas decorations through-out the town. JR had the “luck of the Irish” when he went to Foxwoods!
JR was smitten with his grandkids; he took them to play at the park in Alfred and down to Mother’s Beach in Kennebunk, where they would play for hours and then Gramps’ would take them to the Dairy Queen for a treat. JR will be remembered as a being a “Man’s Man” with a soft spot in his heart for animals, his Shepherd/Lab mix dog Spike was a steady companion by his side for 13 years.
JR will be dearly missed by his family and many friends within the towing and automobile industry. He has now entered into eternal rest.
He is lovingly survived by his wife of 48 years, Genevieve Flaherty of Alfred; his four sons, James and wife Cindy of Lyman; Edward and wife Chris of Acton; David of Alfred and Robert and wife Michelle of Alfred; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; his siblings, John Flaherty, Eleanor Jensen, Maureen McDonald and Linda Flaherty; and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call on Tuesday, July 24th from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak St., in Alfred where a funeral service will be held at on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Committal prayers and burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
