Doris A. (Pinkham) Bernier, 84, of Wells, passed away on September 8, 2018, at South Portland Nursing Home in South Portland, Maine.
Doris was born in Dover, New Hampshire on August 6, 1934, the daughter of Maurice D. and Marie O. (DeRoy) Pinkham. She grew up in South Berwick, Maine and graduated from Berwick Academy, class of 1952.
Doris married Charles (Chuck) Bernier in 1954 and lived briefly in Florida, where Chuck was stationed while serving in the Air Force. In 1956 along with their four-month-old son Charlie the couple moved back to South Berwick, two years later they were blessed with another child Ann. Being a stay at home mom was an important part of Doris’s life. As the children grew and were in school full-time, she returned to the workforce, as well as being very active in local theater groups, Central School’s P.T.A. and teaching Sunday school at the First Parish Federated Church.
In 1967, Doris and her husband moved to Kennebunkport, so Chuck could become a full-time lobsterman. Doris took a position managing a 25-unit apartment building (The Arlington Arms). The Arlington once was a grand old seaside resort and Doris treasured her nine years living and working in such a charming piece of history.
When the Arlington was sold and converted to condominiums, Doris chose to enroll at the University of Maine to get a degree in Human Services and pursued a career working with the elderly. She earned her Associate’s degree graduating from college in 1981. Doris worked at Kennebunk Nursing Center as Director of Social Services for twenty-four years, a job she loved dearly, reluctantly retiring in 2000.
Never one to rest, Doris entered retirement with a zest for new challenges, choosing to learn to paint in oils under the tutelage of her husband (now a professional artist). In her seventies, Doris enjoyed painting alongside Chuck, even opening a studio-gallery in their home. In the summers the couple would travel around New England where Doris found success selling her paintings at weekend art shows they attended.
Doris is survived by her husband of 64 years Charles L. Bernier of Wells, Maine; her son Charles L. Bernier III and his wife Leslie of Harpswell, Maine; her daughter Ann Driscoll and her husband Kent of Kennebunk, Maine; grandsons Corey Driscoll and Charles Bernier IV; great-granddaughter Elizabeth Bernier; sister Lucille(Toofy) Labonte and Joyce Taylor of Cornish, Maine; sister Sandra (Bishy) Cox of Texas; sister Joyce Parker of Eliot, Maine; and sister in law Constance (Connee) Pinkham of Alfred, Maine.
She is predeceased by her brother Robert (Pinky) Pinkham.
The Autumn Green Funeral Home is respectfully handling arrangements.
