Arlene W. Ridley, 89, a well-known longtime resident of Shapleigh, passed peacefully on August 11, 2019, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
Arlene was born in Sanford on September 12, 1929, the daughter of William H. and Miriam (Stansfield) Wilson, Jr. She was raised in Sanford and was a graduate of Sanford High School. Arlene married Vinton T. Ridley of Springvale on August 12, 1950 and welcomed five children into their hearts and home. They moved to Shapleigh in February of 1953.
Arlene was Town Treasurer for the Town of Shapleigh for a number of years. She and Wink owned and operated the Shapleigh Corner Store. Arlene was not only a homemaker; she was Wink’s right hand “girl” in his many ventures. She was a talented seamstress and made all the clothes for her children, baked and decorated several wedding cakes, served as a 4 H leader, worked many years as a Census Taker, and was a member of the Shapleigh Fire Department women’s Auxiliary. She loved doing the families’ genealogy and was so proud of the Ridley heritage.
Arlene will be remembered for her generous nature and serving her town and many friends. She has been the matriarch of this ever growing family and will be dearly missed.
Survivors include her children: Ruth Ridley and spouse Mickey Robichaud; Roger T. Ridley and wife Karen; Sarah Pelletier and husband Romey; Mary Emmons and husband Ray; and Bill T. Ridley and wife Brenda; 20 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was predeceased by her parents and husband, Wink in January 2007.
At Mrs. Ridley’s request, a private burial will held.
