David I. Hayes, 96, was born and died at the Hayes Family Homestead in Limerick on Monday, October 21, 2019. He was the son of Benjamin F. and Agnes (Patterson) Hayes, Jr.
David was a graduate of Limerick High School and married his soulmate and wife Margueritte Illsley on David March 29, 1948. David was a dairy farmer and enjoyed the rhythm and seasons of farming and at one time had over 100 head of cattle; milking between 30 to 45 cows twice a day. He was a “man of principle” and was proud of his membership with the Masons. Owning a farm, David was not only a “farmer” but wore many hats; he fixed and repaired machinery, hayed the fields and fixed broken fences and taught his daughters to become self-sufficient and proficient in driving the tractor. David supported his children and grandchildren in their agricultural endeavors. He was a member of the So. Maine Holstein Club, the Maine Farm Bureau and the Agway Store Committee.
David was always there to lend a hand to his family or anyone else in need. He transported and helped move his granddaughter back-n-forth to college; always stopping at his favorite restaurant and ordering his Scallop dinner! He loved vanilla ice cream and during the winter months enjoyed homemade ice cream. He and Margueritte took many bus trips to sight see along the coast of Nova Scotia and went to the World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tenn. David listened to country and western music and listened to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights. Working on the farm each day became easier when he had his faithful German Shepherd dogs by his side. He also enjoyed his visits with his friend “Peanut” and was known for his dry sense of humor.
David was a faithful and devoted husband and father. He was a strong man with a gentle heart. He will be dearly missed by his family and has now entered into eternal rest.
He is lovingly survived by his wife of 71 years, Margueritte Hayes of Limerick; his daughters, Davelyn H. Hayes of Limerick, Holly Hayes Wyman and husband Dean of Limerick, and Laura Hayes Stone and husband Fred of Arundel; his special grandchildren, Jessica Stone Newton and husband Adam of Richmond, and David Stone of Arundel.
