Irene J. Ross, 92, received her Heavenly Angel wings on February 20, 2017 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
Irene was born in Springvale on February 28, 1924, the daughter of Arthur E. and Hannah (Flynn) Johnson. She attended Sanford High School and graduated with the Class of 1942.
On July 4, 1947, Irene married Ralph H. Ross and together they raised and nurtured five children. Irene worked as a salad girl and waitress at Orrill’s Diner in Sanford. She also worked for the Treasurer’s Office at the University of Maine from 1947 – 1948 as a bookkeeper. While raising her first two children, Irene helped to put her husband Ralph through Law School by working as a bookkeeper for the Goodall Production Department. As always, she did all these things with a joyful heart and smile.
Irene not only possessed a deep faith, she obtained 27 credits from St. Francis College in continuing Religious Education, taught CCD in the late 60’s and early 70’s and worked with Confirmation classes in the 80’s. Irene was also the Secretary for the Worship and Spirituality Commission and taught Remedial Reading for a semester at Holy Family School. In 1972, she was blessed by attending Cursillo.
Irene was very proud to receive her Nurse’s Aide Certification in June of 1970 and cared for the residents at Hillcrest Manor. She later went to work for Dr. Derboven as his bookkeeper from 1974 – 1975. She also worked at King’s Department Store in Ladies Fashions.
Irene was a devout Catholic and a communicant of St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church.
Most of all, Irene was a devoted and loving wife, Mom and friend.
She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Susan Richey and husband Donnie; her son Jeffrey and wife Liz; her daughter Deborah Brook and husband Scott; her son Brian and wife Laurie and her son Timothy and wife Kim; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
