Cecilia M. Garland, 95, better known as “Gram”, died on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Newton Center in Sanford.
Cecilia was born in Rochester, NH on February 15, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Leo and Bertha (Doiron) Letourneau.
For many years, Cecilia worked as a frenchcord-tender in various shoe shops in both Sanford/Springvale, and also in NH. Still active after retirement, she worked at The Colony in Kennebunkport and also at The Brothers in Alfred.
She enjoyed crocheting, singing, gardening, apple-picking, and going to yard sales, and looked forward to car rides to Wells Beach. Everyone was welcomed at her home and you would never leave her home empty-handed. Cecilia was a communicant of St Ignatius Church and generously supported the Seminary education of a foreign student.
Cecilia’s husband, Franklin A. Garland, died in 1994. Her long-time companion, Connor (Martin) Biggie, passed away in 2008. Her daughter, Rebecca Howes died in 2013 and Lillian Gagnon in 2001. She was also predeceased by five siblings, Edmond Letourneau, Lillian Goulet, Rose Demers, Lucy Doiron, and Florida Fougere, and also by her grandson, Kevin Banks.
Survivors include her two daughters, Patricia Stone and her husband George of Sanford and Francis Banks and Fred Strew of Wells; her two sons, Leo Mauzerolle and his wife Judy of Springvale and Mark Garland and his wife Margaret of Springvale; her brother, Joe Letourneau and his wife Gert of Sanford; 21 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held later in the spring at Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford.
