Emily E. Butler, 89, a longtime resident of Wells, died peacefully on January 10, 2015 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Sanford.

Emily was born on September 22, 1925 in Kennebunkport the daughter of George and Carrie (Paull) Brooks.

Emily was married to her soul mate and devoted husband, Benjamin Butler for 65 years. They were united in their faith and were blessed with seven children.  Emily worked at Kesselin Shoe Shop, at Morning Star and provided a home with plenty of love to many children entrusted into her care. She was Nana to everyone who graced her doorway and was a gracious hostess. She made time for her children and they recall many fond memories of Mom being home when they arrived home from school.

Emily and her husband were very active within a Nursing Home Ministry, taught Youth Group, and was a Sunday school teacher.  For many years, she had a Bible Study group at her home.  She and Ben volunteered at the local food pantry and she possessed a generous heart for those less fortunate.  Mrs. Butler read her Bible every day for inspiration and maintained a prayer list for many who needed comfort, “a touch from God” or needed to be valued as a person; no matter the circumstances of their life’s journey.

She and Ben enjoyed fellowship dinners and attended the Wednesday dinners at the Wells Congregational Church where Emily could visit with her friends. Mrs. Butler enjoyed going to the beach and her hands were never idle; she made beautiful doilies and was a great cook.  While sitting on the back deck of her house, she had a bird’s eye view of her many flower gardens and she kept the bird feeders full at all times. It was the simple things in life that made her aware of God’s precious gifts; family, fellowship, a home with children’s laughter and being a part of the Mt. Zion Church for over 50 years.

Mrs. Butler was a true matriarch of her family and she wrote daily words of inspiration and messages from God in her journals. They have now become cherished readings and Light for the days ahead. She will be dearly missed by her family, her church family and has now entered into eternal rest.

She is survived by her husband Benjamin Butler; her children, Phyllis Barker, Amber Beal, Debbie Ham, Bonnie Butler, Bennie Butler and Steven Butler; her adopted daughter, Dot Weeks, a missionary in Belize; her sister, Elanor Leach; 30 grandchildren, 60 great-great grandchildren and 5 generations of family members who loved her; and many close friends.

She was predeceased by her son, Phil Lord; and by her three brothers, Robey, Frank, and Herb Brooks; and by her grandson, Christapher.
