Robert R. Lavertu Sr. (Bob) passed away on Monday, March 30th, 2015 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.

Bob will be remembered as a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky guy; who was always there to lend a hand when needed.  His outgoing nature was obvious to all that knew him and most that didn’t! Bob was born and raised in Sanford and spent most of his life there. He served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1948.  He also served several years in the National Guard at the Sanford Post.

Bob worked many years as a diesel mechanic at Adams Trucking, which later became Auclair Trucking, until they closed.  He then worked at Nike in Saco.  Finally, he worked for and ultimately retired from, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Bob was a long-standing member and officer of the AMVETS Post # 3 in Sanford.  He also volunteered at the food pantry in Alfred for several years. Among the many activities Bob loved and especially enjoyed, were Caribbean cruises, fishing, trips to Oxford Casino and the casinos in Connecticut.

His family was first and foremost in his life.  He enjoyed spending time with each of them; individually or with a group at family gatherings.  He loved to be the life of the party and hearing-or making-people laugh.

Bob is predeceased by his brothers, Oscar and Adrian Lavertu and Randy Durand.

He leaves behind and will be greatly missed by his wife, of almost 66 years, Nita (Zech); his son Robert (Rick) and wife Kathy of South Berwick; his son, Doug of Sanford; his daughter, Susan Lavertu Sansevieri and husband Tim of Acton; his grandchildren,  Tina King (Scott) of Freeport;  Sandy McKeon of Los Angeles, CA;  Kerri Lavertu (Mike Shehorn) of Portsmouth, N.H.;  Tyler Lavertu (Krista) of South Berwick; and Kaitlyn (Sansevieri) Higgins (Joe) of Sanford.  Also his brother, Nornan Lavertu and his wife Melda of Homosassa, Florida. He will also be greatly missed by his three, beautiful great grandchildren, Abbi and Gage King and Emma Higgins. And finally, his beloved, furry friend Rusty, who was also his fishing companion.

At the request of Bob’s family, there will be a celebration of life service held at a later date with committal prayers and burial with military honors at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale.
