Eugene F. Burton and Ellen J. (Deveau) Burton have been reunited once again, Ellen died August 23, 2014 and Eugene died March 31, 2015. They had shared 63 years together and were blessed with their only child, Georgette.
Eugene was known by folks as Gene and Ellen preferred using her middle name, Jeannette. They were both born and raised in Orono. As young newlyweds, they moved to So. Portland to begin a life together and Gene enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy before returning home to work with his brother-in-law, at Ken Deveau Construction. Gene was a master carpenter and Jeannette worked as a legal secretary before she and Gene went out on their own in the residential construction business. Gene was a daily fixture at the Eagles Club in So. Portland.
Both Gene and Jeannette were “brought up the hard way” and were extremely hard workers. Gene worked tirelessly on the homes as Jeannette kept the front office running smoothly. She could type over 110 words a minute on the “ole fashioned” typewriter. It wasn’t until their daughter, Georgette Jones owned the Blue Door Restaurant and Gift Shop in Alfred did they allow themselves some “free time off.”
Jeannette would come down every other week to help out at the gift shop; where she hand- painted folk art dolls and many other unique gifts. Gene would help the ladies load up their cars with the special gifts during the holiday season. Together, they became known in town as Gram and Gramp. As with many longtime married couples, there were days when their relationship could be described as, “Oil –N-Water” – Yet, through illness, graying hair and arthritic joints, they stayed united as a couple!
They did enjoy traveling and taking cruised to Barbados, the Caribbean Island and touring in Jamaica with dear friends. Gene always paid their way even when trips were offered by suppliers and other business associates. Gene had integrity and never forgot where he came from. Their commitment to family never waived – they were extremely proud of their daughter Georgette’s successes and were faithful grandparents.
You are invited to join their daughter, Georgette Jones of Limerick and their three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren celebrate the lives of Gene and Jeannette on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak St., in Alfred from 6 – 8 p.m. Committal prayers and burial will be held later at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale.
The Autumn Green Funeral Home is respectfully handling arrangements.
