Gerald L. Oakes, 63, died suddenly on February 6, 2016 at his mother-in-law’s home in North Waterboro.
Gerald was born on January 28, 1953 in Presque Isle the son of Warren H. and Catherine M. (Curtis) Oakes.
For many years Gerald worked in a variety of positions with the Levesque Lumber Company in Ashland. While attending classes, Gerald met his future wife and soul mate, Karen Iovine. They have shared 24 years of marriage, raised four children and opened their hearts and home to many throughout the years. Gerald became a “stay-at-home” dad so Karen could pursue her nursing career. The kids were more than happy with Dad being in their lives on a daily basis. He provided transportation back and forth for school events, was a great cook in his own right, and kept the house neat and tidy. You could always find his smiling face in the stands on the many soccer games he attended.
Gerald was affectionately named “Papa” from his children and grandchildren. He was an accomplished artist who excelled in number of mediums; whether he was drawing or painting. One of his favorite past times was walking along Old Orchard Beach collecting sand dollars, shells, and sea glass, often with his children in tow. Gerald was also known to be a “Dog Whisperer.” He had this calming and gentle nature when it came to both cats and dogs. He never minded when the household adopted another pet.
Gerald protected and cared for his family with a sense of loyalty and enthusiasm. He was known to be a faithful and true friend; one that gave generously and without judgment. He will be dearly missed by his family and his many friends “up in the County” and within his church family at Lakeside Community Church.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Karen Oakes; his children, Danny Jasper, Toni Berube, Debra Berube, and Scott Berube, Jr.; his sister, Charlotte Oakes; his four brothers, Warren, Neil, Carlton and Peter Oakes; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; his step children, Albert and Angela Robichaud and Elaine Dongan; one niece and seven nephews. Gerald was predeceased by his parents
