Earl R. Gray, 57, a lifelong resident of Waterboro, died on November 18, 2016, from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
Earl was born in Saco on May 31, 1959, the son of Warren O. and Marion E. (McPherson) Gray and joined his older brother, Raymond and sister Corinne. Earl and his siblings grew up on Main Street in Waterboro and joined the neighborhood kids in playing hide-go-seek, picking up a quick game of baseball or going down to the favorite fishing hole. Earl wanted to be out and about with his friends. He attended school in town and graduated from Massabesic High School. It was during his teen years that he began working at Pine Grove South Cemetery; mowing lawns and helping when there were burials. Earl was always kind and professional when working with the families and funeral directors. He would go above and beyond the “call of duty” to make sure the cemetery was taken care.
Earl possessed an easy going manner; he was one that would give you his shirt off his back. In his younger years he was a volunteer fireman with the Waterboro Fire Department. For many years he drove truck for Owen’s Excavating. Earl was a dedicated volunteer driver for York County Community Action and became very close with the many folks he transported to their appointments. Often he became their confidant and he knew how to listen without judgement. He would smile and say, “Everything is going to be all right, you can do this!”
Earl loved to go to the races; whether it was to Beech Ridge Speedway or to Oxford Plains Speedway. He was known to be “in the pit” changing tires with his daughter, Stephanie, with the tire gauge in hand. Earl could be found at the Chevette’s house working on a car with his buddies, Marcel and David. For many years he and his best friend, Jeff Charland, would travel to the races in a travel trailer to spend the weekend together. He was also a huge NASCAR fan. Earl enjoyed wood working and working with his hands, getting the lawn mower and snow blower tuned up. You would see the gentle side of Earl when he was with his children, Paul and Stephanie. He was very proud of the both of them, as they became kind and caring adults.
Earl was devoted to his family and was his mother’s caregiver. He stayed connected to her through-out his day by phone and was greeted by his dog, Blackie, his special four legged companion when he arrived home. Earl will be dearly missed by his family and by his many friends within the community.
Earl is lovingly survived by his mother, Marion Gray of Waterboro; his children, Paul Gray of Rhode Island and Stephanie Gray of Sanford; his brother, Raymond Gray and wife Brenda of Waterboro and his sister, Corinne Moulton and husband Kenneth of Sanford; his niece, Tracy Gray of Waterboro; and the mother of his children, Laurie Gray of Sanford; and several cousins.
A Celebration of Earl’s life will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the South Waterboro Bible Chapel, 911 Main St., in Waterboro. Please bring your stories and memories to share with Earl’s family. And of course, Earl would want you to enjoy the refreshments!
