Beryl E. Sweeney, 83, a longtime resident of Springvale, died peacefully at York Hospital on October 18, 2017, just two days following her 83rd birthday.

Beryl was born on October 16, 1934 at home in Shapleigh, the daughter of Harold L. and Ethel N. (Nason) Hamilton, Sr.

She grew up in Waterboro and graduated from Waterboro High School with the Class of ’51. While working at the Waterboro Tannery, she met her future husband, Richard Sweeney and they married September 1, 1958. Together they made their home in Springvale and shared in the joy of raising two daughters, Kellie and Debra. One of Richard’s happiest memories together came from singing Christmas carols in the softly lit church at Pleasant Street Free Baptist church in Springvale.

Beryl was very athletic through-out her lifetime. She loved to coach softball and was very proud of her team “Pare Oil” – as they were known to play competitively, yet always having fun. She loved the outdoors; whether it was four-wheeling, fishing, walks on the beach, hiking, canoeing or kayaking. They went camping as a family in North Conway, NH often sleeping in the back of the pick-up truck.

Beryl worked at Shaw’s Supermarket for 25 years where she made many memories and long term friendships. Beryl was active within her community, being a member of the Eastern Star, TOPS and the Red Hat Society.

Beryl’s heart was always with her husband, family and friends. The family gathered during the holidays where she could spoil them with her pies, cookies and other goodies. No one could come close to making a perfect pie crust like her.  Beryl took great pride in keeping her home warm and welcoming for her family and friends to visit.

Beryl will be remembered for being a Great Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, friend (especially her lifelong friend, Sylvia Reddy) and her generous nature. She will always be remembered for putting the needs of others before her own. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by her family and close friends.

Beryl is survived by her husband of 59 years, Richard Sweeney of Springvale; her two daughters, Kellie Slattery and husband Steve of Sanford and Debra Sweeney and Fiancé, Marc of California; her favorite grandson, Ryan Williams and partner Frank of Kennebunk; her two great- grandchildren who affectionately called her GiGi, Aiden and Ella Williams and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three siblings, Wendell Hamilton, Harold Hamilton, Jr. and Josephine A. Chadbourne.
