Paul H. Cabana, 77, a longtime resident of Sanford, died at the Newton Center with his family by his side on September 30, 2018.

Paul was born on March 25, 1941 in Saco, the son of Henry and Florence (Lajoie) Cabana.

After serving his country in the U. S. Army and U.S. Air Force, Paul worked many jobs, many in the machining profession, before settling in at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Paul worked in Shop 31 as a machinist until retiring approximately 22 years ago. While at the “yard” as it’s commonly referred to, Paul traveled extensively to work his craft as a machinist. He traveled to places such as Scotland, Virginia, and California.

Paul and his wife Claire traveled to California and purchased a 1970 Chevy Malibu, which they named “Genie” – and subsequently drove this classic car back to Maine after Claire instructed Paul she would never fly on a plane again. Genie still resides in Maine where she’s well cared for.

Paul was smitten with the Cadillac brand, whether he was driving around town or to work. He would take the kids out for rides in the Caddy and throttle up just right over those “belly bumps.” It’s that weightless feeling we all remember from at least childhood and maybe an adult road trip or two.

Paul enjoyed breakfast with the boys and his hobbies were being outdoors and boating. He would never pass up a trip to Shaw’s Supermarkets to get in some exercise walking, but more importantly, a chance to check every clearance item within the four walls. Paul also enjoyed his computer, sharing stories and photos on Facebook and the occasional political “discussion” with family and friends.

Paul will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Paul is lovingly survived by his wife of 40 years, Claire (Carpentier) Cabana of Sanford; his son, Brian Cabana of Alfred; Brian’s daughter’s, Cora Cabana of Biddeford and Sarah Cabana of New York; his son Shawn Cabana and wife Sherry and their two children, Morgan and Mason of Biddeford; his daughter Sherri and husband Shane Lafontaine, Sr. and their two children, Shane and Mikaela of Hollis Center.

A Graveside Service with military honors will be held on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery, 83 Stanley Rd., in Springvale.
