Robert L. Stimpson, Jr., 75, a longtime resident of Goose Rocks Road, died on December 7, 2018 at So. Maine Health Care in Biddeford. He was surrounded in love with his family by his side.
Robert was born on June 5, 1943 in Colebrook, New Hampshire, one of eight children of Robert L. and Clara M. (Bunnell) Stimpson, Sr. In 1947, Bob moved with his family to the ‘Port’ and he soon met the girl who would become his school sweetheart, Anna Williams. They both graduated from Kennebunk High School in 1961 and were married in 1962; and soon began their family of four boys and one daughter.
Robert and Anna were blessed with big hearts; they not only loved and nurtured their own children but were Foster Parents close to 11 years and welcomed over 27 children into their home. Each year they planted a huge garden and heated the house with a wood stove. There were plenty of hands to weed the gardens, help with the canning of the veggies and stacking the fire wood!
Robert was a proud dump truck driver who worked for several contractors locally. He loved nothing better than keeping his truck clean and in tip top shape. He was known to tell a good story and loved to joke around. On the weekend, Sundays were “Family Day” – which meant they had a big meal at noontime and then loaded the kids in the car and off they’d go. One of Bob’s happiest places to relax and fish was their camp on Lone Pond in Waterboro. When they first started to go there, they had no electricity; (and still don’t) it means everyone has to go to bed early!
Robert taught each and every one of his kids’ practical life lessons. His voice could be heard, “Do your chores and we can go to camp.” “You can have anything you want in life, as long as you work for it.” And, only from a man who loved driving his truck, “May the love for driving keep his gears shifting and wheels turning.” Each day, Bob went to work and provided for his family. By his example, his children and many others have become hard working adults and devoted to their families. And, in Bob’s eyes . . . that’s the greatest gift one can give.
Robert will be dearly missed by his wife of 55 years, Anna Stimpson of Kennebunkport; his four sons, Daniel Stimpson and wife Ginny of Kennebunkport; Douglas Stimpson and wife Molly of Kennebunk; David Stimpson and wife Cathy of Sanford; Dennis Stimpson and wife Mary of Kennebunkport; and his daughter, Debbie Dorler and husband Scott of Navarre, Florida; eleven grandchildren and one great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A private celebration of Robert’s life will be held in the spring.
