Rex B. Howard, 71, loving husband and devoted father, passed peacefully with his loving family by his side, on January 20, 2019 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
Rex was born on August 25, 1947 in Red Bank, New Jersey the son of James and Martha (Lindo) Howard. He was raised in a lively household with four older brothers and an older sister. Throughout their growing up years and into adulthood, they were extremely close and came to Maine in the 1960’s with their parents; camping in a tent, enjoying all of the great outdoors Maine offered to a teenage boy. Rex served proudly in the U. S. Navy from 1968 – 1970.
Rex and his lovely wife, Dianne, met on April 3, 1972 and got engaged six weeks later and six months later on December 3, 1972 they were married and recently celebrated 46 years of being best friends and soul mates. They made their home in Massachusetts for many years and were blessed with a baby girl, Amanda. In 2015 they moved to Maine so they could be closer to Amanda and her husband Josh, and their precious granddaughter, Ruby.
Rex graduated from Boston University and began a long career as a project manager with Digital Equipment. Rex was a talented and smart businessman; who traveled extensively representing the company in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and many other countries. Throughout all his company’s reorganizations he was always proud to never have had to lay anyone off.
Rex was the consummate cook and found his way around the kitchen with grace and ease. He made the best Ravioli’s and Scali Bread. Rex shared his love of cooking with his daughter Amanda and all his family. Rex maintained a loving and supportive relationship with his siblings and there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them. Rex was an avid reader, enjoyed classic movies and loved taking Annie, his Portuguese water dog to Roger’s pond for a swim. In earlier years he could be found creating unique sand sculptures on the Gooch’s beach with family.
Rex is lovingly survived by his wife, Dianne Howard of Kennebunk and by his daughter, Amanda Sokolow and husband, Josh Sokolow and their daughter, Ruby. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
