J. Richard Harrison, 92, passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. He was comforted by his loving wife Carolyn, his children and grandchildren.

Richard was born on March 4, 1927 and grew up in Sanford, where he was raised by his mother, Yvonne LeBreaux Harrison. He attended the Sanford Schools before joining the United States Navy, serving in California during the end of World War II.

Richard was among the brave young men who fought to save York County during the ’47 Fire.

Richard met the love of his life, Carolyn, and they were married in Sanford in 1951. They lived in Sanford for a short time before settling down in Alfred where they resided for 60 plus years. Most recently they lived in “The Little House” on Fletcher Street in Kennebunk.

As a young man, Richard worked in the Sanford Mills before he joined American Cyanamid where he worked for 15 years. After a variety of other jobs, he went to work at Pratt and Whitney in No. Berwick. He was most proud to be the holder of badge #131 and retired in the late 1990’s.

Richard was most comfortable at home and spending time with his family. He spent many summers vacationing and camping in the White Mountains, Nova Scotia, and Montreal, Canada. After retirement he enjoyed trips to Vermont, California, Nevada, Alaska, Florida and Washington, D.C.

Richard loved and supported his family in every way he could. He was happy to attend every concert, theatre production and a variety of sporting events. From the nursey school art shows to watching his children and grandchildren play at the High School and Collegiate levels. Richard was a diehard Yankees fan but he wasn’t disappointed when the Red Sox won the Pennant. The love and support he gave his family will be greatly missed each and every day.

Richard is lovingly survived by his wife of 68 years, Carolyn M. (Stevens) Harrison of Kennebunk; his six children, Stephen R. Harrison, Sr. and partner Robin Frost of Shapleigh; Kathryn J. Harrison of Portland; Daniel W. Harrison and wife Lisa of Kennebunk; Alan J. Harrison and wife Susan of Alfred; Beth A. Burchill and husband David of Kennebunk; and Ellen L. Harrison of Portland; by eleven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Richard is also survived by his sister-in-law, Janet S. Allen of Newfield and two nieces and one nephew.
