Barbara A. (Thyng) Burns, 88, of Alfred, loving wife to Robert, devoted mother to David and Robert passed away on December 27, 2019, with her family by her side at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
Barbara was born in Kennebunk, the daughter of Grover and Vergie (Newcomb) Thyng, one of 14 children.
Barbara and her husband Bob celebrated 61 years of marriage prior to his passing on June 2, 2013. Barbara and Bob were married at the Kennebunk Baptist Church and honeymooned one night at Square Pond in Acton, both had to return to the family farm to keep up with their daily chores along with raising beef cattle.
Barbara and Robert raised two sons and continued to help Bob’s parents on the farm.
Together Barbara and Bob would go camping, traveling to Florida, Tennessee and to Kansas to spend time with their sons and their families.
Barbara loved her family and was happiest when they would all gather or come by for a visit.
Barbara worked at Lavalley Lumber for over 20 years in the Accounting and Payroll department. Barbara also worked at Andrew Enterprise Construction, Alfred Garage as well as Pioneer Plastics.
Barbara once shared that while she and her husband worked second shift together at Pioneer Plastic’s; they grew over 2 – 3 acres of Blue Hubbard Squash, one day was put aside for picking in the fields with the next day delivering the squash to large grocery stores in Scarborough and Portland.
Christmas was Barbara’s favorite time of the year, devoting one full room in her home just for Christmas decorations. Barbara loved to bake bread, cookies, tea cakes as well as the Maine staple whoopie pies; so many of her goodies were shared with her family and friends during the holiday season.
Barbara was a very kind and generous person; she cherished her family and friendships. To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was lovingly referred to as “Gramma.” Barbara has been reunited with the love of her life, her husband Robert.
She is lovingly survived by her two sons; David Burns and wife Mikyong of Alfred; Robert J.
