Constance Swensen, 81, of Lyman, passed away peacefully at her home with her loving family by her side on February 10, 2020.
Constance was born on June 9, 1938 in Newton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Gordon and Martha (Berry) Speedie.
Constance married Reverend Oscar Swensen and shared 55 years together as a loving couple. Constance graciously would take a step back to allow her husband to shine. Oscar often referred to her as “his bride,” sadly, Oscar passed away in 2014.
As a minister’s wife, she was very devoted to her husband’s calling; on many occasions they would have gatherings at their home during the holiday season enjoying a traditional Norwegian Christmas drink called Glogg.
Constance loved to cook and each dish she prepared was presented beautifully to those sitting around her table. Spending time tending her flower garden in the warm months was a joy for her. Constance was an exceptional knitter and enjoyed crocheting, and was a talented seamstress. When her daughter Bara announced that she was getting married, Constance gave her daughter a precious gift, sewing her wedding dress. Being the proud mother of the bride, she created her own dress for the special day.
Both Constance and Oscar shared a love for cats and through the years both were proud parents of many fur babies.
Constance was a gift and blessing to everyone that had the pleasure of loving and knowing her. She will be sadly missed by many.
Constance is survived by three daughters, Kristen Hicks of Wenham, Massachusetts; Bara Sargent and husband Steve of Kapaa Hawaii; and Sonje Swensen of Gorham, Maine; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Constance’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 15, 2020 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 13 Cleveland St., in Saco, Maine with Rev. Dave Dalzell, officiating. Immediately following the service, please join the family in the parish hall for a time of sharing stories, memories and refreshments.
