Shirley M. Austin, 96, a longtime resident of Springvale, passed peacefully on February 28, 2020 at Biddeford Estates.
Shirley was born on May 31, 1923, the daughter of Daniel R. and Isabelle L. (Trefethen) Austin.
Shirley joined the U. S. Navy during World War II and served as a Wave in the postal department with headquarters in DC. When the war was over she went back to school and received a Master’s degree in education from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. She taught math and physical education at Kennett High School in Conway, NH.
Shirley had many interests and worked in a variety of settings during her working career. She was a social worker for the Maine Department of Human Services working with the elderly and people with disabilities. Shirley’s last employment was as secretary and office manager in the Sanford office of York County Visiting Nurses.
Shirley’s interests were in traveling both on land and sea. She took two trips driving across country and several Schooner trips along the Maine coast. Most summers she lived on Great East Lake in a log cabin built by her father and mother. Shirley liked to entertain friends and they came as far away as Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Shirley was adventurous and quite an athlete. She also had a tender heart and maintained a lifelong relationship with Anne Raymond, who she taught how to cross country ski, snow shoe through the woods and searching the beach for sand dollars. Shirley would say, “Physical activities in nature made you feel good and kept you well. She lived what she believed.”
Shirley is survived by her longtime caregiver and friend, Anne Raymond and husband Scott; her friends of 50 plus years, Roberta Wentworth and husband Erlan; three nieces, twins Sheryl Jordan and Shirley Dennison; and Allyson Dolliver. She was predeceased by her parents, Daniel and Isabelle Austin and her sister, Barbara Dolliver.
