A Graveside Service with military honors will be held later at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale.

Joseph Roger Robert Bougie went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on May 14, 2020. Joseph was born in Sanford, Maine on September 27, 1944 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford, Maine to Lionel Bougie and Liza (Plante) Bougie. Joe attended St Ignatius School and Sanford High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age 17, and where he had a very distinguished career. Joe served two tours in Vietnam where he earned the bronze star medal for meritorious service in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. In 1966 Joe married Sandra Kay Secord in the state of Washington. They had 4 children, Carl Bougie in 1966, Wendy in 1967, Anita in 1972 and Robin in 1972. The couple divorced in 1981. Joe met and married his second wife, Louise Allen, in 1981 and the couple lived in Maine, Florida and Colorado until Joe retired from the military in 1988. In 1996 Joe and Louise returned to Maine where Joe worked for Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club before retiring in 2002.

Joe and Louise joined Mount Vernon Baptist Church in 2000 where he met his good friend the late Pastor Carl Storme. Pastor Storme mentored Joe into the gospel of ministry and he became a certified pastor in 2002. From 2002-2005 Joe enjoyed preaching the gospel at various churches in Maine. In 2005, Joe was hired as the lead pastor of Norridgewock Baptist Church where he served from 2005 to 2016.  Pastor Joe and his wife, Louise, led a very fruitful ministry, not only building and nurturing the church membership but also leading many lost souls to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Pastor Joe and Louise were greatly loved by the church flock and also by the community of Norridgewock where they developed many relationships, performed many marriages and funerals and were regular participants in Memorial Day celebrations and other community events. Pastor Joe retired from ministry in 2016 and he and Louise returned to Sanford, Maine where they could be closer to their family. Joe was known for his outgoing personality and teasing nature. Joe was a lifelong member of the VFW and the NRA.

Joe was predeceased by his son Robin in 2012 and by his sister Rita Demers in 1997.

Joe is survived by his wife Louise Bougie of Sanford, Maine; his son Carl Bougie and his wife Kris of Munising, Michigan; Carl’s daughter Desiree Bougie and her two children Liam and Noah of Munising, Michigan; Carl’s son Tylor Bougie of Springfield, OK; Joe’s daughters Wendy Nations and Anita Bougie of Germfask, Michigan; Anita’s children, Zach Bougie of Munising, Michigan and Jessica Kline of Munising, Michigan; Zach’s three children, Melody, Gabrielle, and Isabelle.

Joe also leaves his nieces and nephews, Rita’s children: Cindy Demers of Sanford, Maine; Susan and Jerry, his niece Susan Cole and nephew Darrin Demers; his great niece Amanda L. Welch of Lebanon, Maine and her children Savannah and Everett. Joe’s surviving siblings are his sisters Irene Ross and Cecile Tuttle, both of Sanford, Maine and Lorette Rodriguez of Somersworth, NH and a brother, Mark Hanson of Sanford, Maine. Joe will be missed by his five step-children Bill Allen of Kennebunk, Maine, Joyce Goodwin of Sanford, Maine, Lenny Allen of Charles Town, WV, Gary Allen of Saco, Maine and Dennis Allen of Sebago Lake, Maine.

A Graveside Service with military honors will be held later at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Norridgewock Baptist Church at 22 Main Street, Norridgewock, Maine, 04957.
