Jessie B. Allen, 94, a beloved neighbor and longtime resident of Alfred, died peacefully at The Gorham House on July 13, 2020.
She was born at home in Madison, New Hampshire, on June 7, 1926, the youngest of nine children born to Frank B. and Sylvia M. (Harriman) Bickford. The Bickford family moved to Alfred in the early 1940’s. Jessie and her siblings went to a one room school house about a mile from their home. During the winter months they rode on a sleigh through the snow.
Jessie was married to Clifford Harvey Allen on July 18, 1945, just after the World War II. They settled in Alfred where they raised three children. Jessie worked outside the home and was well known at Maude Roberts Counter and at Leedy’s Restaurant; usually on the morning shift. Each year Jessie and kids would pick from the strawberry patch that Clifford “Kippy” had planted and from the sale of quarts of strawberries, they would enjoy a week at Rangeley Lake! This trip has endured through the years within our families. Strawberries left for the family were turned into jellies and jam.
Each year the family would plant a large vegetable garden and Jessie would be busy in the fall canning the bountiful harvest. She was a go-getter and her home cooked meals were a treat! She made fresh desserts each day for her family and baked many loafs of bread. Jessie never minded if one of the kid’s friends stayed for supper – she always had enough to share. Together, Jessie and Kippy enjoyed going to the American Legion for bean suppers and card parties.
Jessie and her family loved their camp Swan Pond in Lyman, where they enjoyed swimming, toasting marshmellows and of course the Lobster feeds. She also took trips to Las Vegas for chess tournaments and many memories were made on the trip to Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry. While visiting Nashville, they took a paddle boat ride and Jessie also traveled to visit family in Texas and Oklahoma.
But first and foremost, Jessie was devoted to her family and loved all the grandchildren that joined the family. She possessed a kind and sweet personality. Her welcoming smile and twinkle in her eyes made everyone in her presence feel loved and special. She is once again reunited with her husband, Kippy who died in 2003 and her son, Stephen H. Allen who passed in 2019.
Jessie is lovingly survived by her children Sharon A. “Sherry” Dowe and partner Don LaFlamme and Joan E. Rand and husband George “Gerry” Rand. Also surviving her are six grandchildren, Christopher Chamberlain and partner Jennifer Maddocks, Jason Chamberlain and wife Erica, Kristen Allen Gervais and husband Richard, Jeffrey Allen and wife Jennifer, Amanda Rand Bradish and husband Jamie, Raelynn Rand Moore and husband Stan. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Laurie Creighton Allen and Craig Chamberlain, former son-in-law.
Also, Jessie is survived by 16 great-grandchildren including Craig J. Chamberlain, Paige Shaver, Joshua Shaver, Sierra Shaver Chamberlain, Kourtney Freeman, Jesse Chamberlain, Cole Chamberlain, Olivia Gervais, Brady Allen, Brianna Allen, Grace Bradish, Hannah Bradish, Elizabeth Bradish, Henry Bradish, Kameron Grondin and Bryson Wolfhart.
Jessie also had two great-great-grandchildren, Dominic “DJ” Nyland and brand-new Natallie Rae, born on July 11, 2020. And, many nieces and nephews and cousins including Caroline Harrison, Janet Allen, and Florence May Lytle, Sylvia Dore and Rodney Johnson and others.

Her family wishes to thank the RN’s Sally and Courtney at The Gorham House and special thanks to Robin and Pat with Beacon Hospice.
