Genevieve A. Flaherty, 69, a loving mother and grandmother, died peacefully at York Hospital on December 11, 2020.

Genevieve was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on December 26, 1950, the daughter of Edward and Genevieve (Cole) Doughty. She was raised in Lowell and educated at St. Margaret’s and graduated from Keith Hall Catholic High School. On June 6, 1970, Genevieve married her soulmate and husband, James R. Flaherty (known by all as JR) and welcomed into their home four sons. Gen worked second shift at the Y as a secretary and JR would bring her the kids in at 11:00 p.m. before starting his overnight shift in security. Gen also worked as a bus driver for many years in Lowell. They both were devoted parents and worked hard to make sure their family had what they needed.

In 1985, they both decided it was time to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city and moved their family to Maine. This was the beginning of their successful business, JR Towing and Auto Sales. Gen worked as the bookkeeper and kept everyone headed in the right direction!

Genevieve had many friends and several from her school days. She organized and found great places for the 50 plus group to eat breakfast and socialize. They would take in comedy shows and Gen loved Justin McKinney. They also took in many musicals and plays at the Rochester Opera House and traveled to Boothbay to take in the wonder of Gardens Aglow – the winter lights and decorations at the botanical gardens. Genevieve also loved going to the casinos, especially Foxwoods, where she would play the slots.

She and JR took many trips to Branson, Missouri to hear their favorite singers and be transported back-in-time when they were younger. They also spent many happy hours cruising in their restored 1955 Packard. Gen loved her many cats through-out the years and her two rescue dogs, Spike and Honey. She was also a longtime Red Sox fan.

Genevieve will be dearly missed by her family and many close friends. She has been reunited with her parents, her husband JR, her infant daughter Mary Flaherty, and granddaughter Destiny Flaherty and her sister Anne Inglis.

She is lovingly survived by her children, Rob Flaherty and wife Michelle of Alfred; Dave Flaherty of Alfred; Ed Flaherty and wife Christine of Acton and Jim Flaherty and wife Cindy of Lyman; her sister, Sheila Poirier and husband Walter of Lowell, MA; six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; and her best friend since 1953 June Dailey of Lowell, MA; and many nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service will be held in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred.
