Avis Arline Munroe, 84, a loving “mom” and grandmother, passed peacefully at her son’s home on January 2, 2021in Limerick. As Mom wrapped her arms of love around us through the years, all her family wrapped their loving arms around her, one more time, as she began a new journey.

Avis was born in Sanford on May 4, 1936, the daughter of Edward and Florence (Hooper) Wentworth. She and her younger sister Linda were extremely close and grew up together in Sanford. Linda and her husband Vic live in Georgia and they always made the trip to Maine for Avis’s birthday. Linda also remembered Avis on Mother’s Day with a special card; Avis took Linda under her wings and was like a second Mom to her. Linda also took the time to make Avis a homemade ice cream cake when she visited.

In 1961, Avis and her husband Robert purchased a perfect parcel of land in North Berwick, to build there forever family homestead. Her son Dennis continues to live in the family home. Tragically Robert, the love of her life and soulmate died in 1963. As a young wife and mother Avis’s community rallied together to help her and the generosity and kindness continued throughout the years while Avis raised her family.

Avis treasured her friendships and was remarkably close to Pearl Clock. Pearl assisted in the home birth of her son Jeff. Avis missed her dear friend when she passed away unexpectedly, and often reflected on the time they spent together.

Avis worked hard to provide for her family, each child had chores to do around the house. She taught all her children how to defend themselves, become hard working adults, and to be good providers for their families. They never felt that they went without, whether it was food, school clothes or celebrating the holidays. She was truly the backbone of her family and possessed a huge heart that was full of unconditional love. Avis was not ‘just a mother’ but Mom to all of us. Anyone that needed a helping hand were welcomed in her home.

Avis was creative and her ceramic collection is vast and wide. Each of us have a special treasure made with our Mom’s two hands. She was an artist in her own right. She could draw special pictures on her T-shirts and other clothing with Mark Tex Textile Markers to personalize them.

Our Mom has now entered into eternal peace and is once again reunited with the love of her life, our Dad, Robert Munroe, and daughter Denise Munroe. We will miss you and love you always.

She is lovingly survived by her children: Samuel Munroe of North Waterboro; Robert Munroe of Lexington, Kentucky; Dennis Munroe and wife Cindy of No. Berwick; Darrell Munroe and his partner Lakeisha Davis of St. Louis, Missouri; Dwayne Munroe of Sanford; Jeff Munroe and Michelle Crowley of Limerick; and Kim Munroe-Christianson and Dan Christianson of New Portland, Maine. Also, by her 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild on the way; and by her younger sister Linda Bailey and husband Vic of Georgia; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will have private services later in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, please share a personal remembrance with your family. We shall always hear our Mom’s words, “Don’t make me say it twice!” Having our own families now, we understand just what Mom meant!

The Autumn Green Funeral Home is respectfully handling arrangements.
