Laurette Mary Cole
July 3, 1939 - January 4, 2021
At this time, no services will be held.
Laurette M. Cole, 81, loving wife of Arthur W. Cole and mother to Keith Cole passed away at the Newton Center on January 4, 2021 after a long illness.
Laurette was born in Sanford on July 3, 1939, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Bernier) Butler.
During the Depression and being the eldest of 10 children in the family, Laurette recognized that she was needed at home and placed her education on hold and helped to care for her siblings until she married her husband Arthur.
When the “love birds” decided to share their lives together, Laurette was just 16 and Arthur was 20. They had to get their parent’s signature because they both were underage. Arthur and Laurette were married on September 3, 1955 at Judge Hutchburg’s residence; the wonderful couple recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past September.
Laurette’s loving temperament and kind open heart came natural for her. If there was anyone whom she met that needed a lending hand, Laurette would extend hers to them. During her marriage she sheltered and cared for her many friends and siblings. As Arthur described, “if the Devil knocked on the door needing help, she would have invited him in for dinner”. Laurette never turned a blind eye to anyone in need; she lovingly took notice of a particular neighbor who was struggling. Many would not have noticed how much this neighbor needed help, but Laurette took him in and showed him unconditional kindness. With her help and encouragement, he found his way and later in his life married and fulfilled his dream of having a child of his own.
Laurette was the matriarch of her family; she was slight in stature, but Laurette was extraordinarily strong-willed, compassionate, and hard working. Laurette loved her family, especially the grandchildren and the great grandchildren. The one request she ever made of them all was to, “please remember me, remember our times together and remember I love you”.
Laurette is lovingly survived by her husband Arthur W. Cole of Sanford; son Keith Cole and wife Eileen of Sanford; grandchildren Jessica Damuth of Acton, Deanna Abrams of Sanford, Richard Bernotas Jr, of Waterbury, CT and Jonathan Bernotas of Graham, NC; great grandchildren, Abraham Damuth, Benjamin Damuth, Caleb Noble, Hailey Noble, Paige Abrams, Joseph Abrams, Vittoria Abrams, Anthony Savarese, Juliana Bernotas, Jayden Bernotas and Adalind Bernotas, and her siblings, Edward Butler, Pearl Tuttle, David Butler, Chuck Butler, and Roger Butler.
Laurette was predeceased by two brothers, Frank Butler and Ronnie Butler and by two sisters, Rena Plummer, and Lorraine Butler.
There will be a celebration of her life in the spring. Her family will notify everyone in advance of the date, location, and time.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you consider making a memorial contribution to the Dementia Society of America https://www.dementiasociety.org
The Autumn Green Funeral Home is respectfully handling her arrangements.
