Arthur W. Cole

November 7, 1934 -

U.S. Veteran

Service Date:

A celebration of life will be held in the Spring

Arthur W. Cole, 86, loving husband of Laurette M. Cole and father to Keith Cole passed away at the Gosnell House Hospice on February 1, 2021 after a brief illness.

Arthur was born in North Berwick on November 7, 1934, the son of Ray and Grace (Murray) Cole.

Arthur attended Sanford schools and after graduation joined the US Army and later completed his service as a member of the US Army National Guard.  After his civil service Arthur went to work for Hussey Seating in North Berwick, as a welder until his retirement 45 years later in 2000.

Arthur had an adventurous side to him and at times was a little mischievous.  He once decided to try to play “Rodeo” so he saddled his grandfather’s cow in the barn.  He said the ride was pretty short once he climbed on.  And, when his grandfather asked him where all the bruises came from, he told him, “I fell down the stairs”.

In 1953, Arthur met the love of his life, Laurette and they married on September 3, 1955.  Regardless of everyone saying, “It will never last”, the love birds celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past September.

Arthur was a quiet and unassuming man who was known to play pranks at times.  Because of his quiet personality, no one ever suspected he was involved, but those of us who knew him well could always tell because of his “innocent smirk” he’d give when the prank succeeded.

Arthur enjoyed helping people and believed there were no strangers, only friends he hadn’t met yet.  He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He was soft spoken and lovingly had the nickname of “The Pied Piper” because anywhere he sat the little children would gather around him to play.  He used to keep his wallet in his shirt pocket and the kids loved to sit on his lap and play with it and look at the pictures.

Arthur is lovingly survived by his son Keith Cole and wife Eileen of Sanford; 4 grandchildren Jessica Damuth of Acton, Deanna Abrams of Sanford, Richard Bernotas Jr, of Sanford and Jonathan Bernotas of Graham, NC; 11 great grandchildren, Abraham Damuth, Benjamin Damuth, Caleb Noble, Hailey Noble, Paige Abrams, Joseph Abrams, Vittoria Abrams, Anthony Savarese, Juliana Bernotas, Jayden Bernotas and Adalind Bernotas, and his brother Richard Cole of Arundel.

Arthur was predeceased by his beloved wife, Laurette Cole this past January.

There will be a celebration of his life in the spring.  His family will notify everyone in advance of the date, location, and time.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you consider making a memorial contribution to the American Kidney Fund
