December 5, 1930 - June 28, 2021
Friends and family are invited to a period of visitation on Friday, July 2, 2021 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Autumn Green Funeral Home.
Mary C. Burggren, 90, longtime resident of Alfred, passed away on June, 28, 2021 in Scarborough with her family lovingly by her side.
Mary was born on December 5, 1930, into a large Irish Family in Malden, MA., Mary was the daughter of John and Marion (MacDonald) Connors.
She was the oldest of seven and a caretaker her whole life. Mary grew up in a wonderfully close family, getting together weekly at her mom’s house for Sunday dinner. As the children and families grew, each found time to still get together every Sunday until her parents passed. Mary maintained very close relationships even as the people she loved followed their own journey in life and began to move away. Weekly, or sometimes daily, phone calls between the sisters replaced in-person gatherings but their bond never broke. Her phone was always nearby and in the last year, with COVID, the phone was her lifeline.
Mary met and married her husband of 65 years, Gerald Burggren. Together they raised four children in Saugus, MA. They have supported one another from the beginning. When Gerald was in a car accident, Mary went to work to support the family. With young children at home, she became a working mom before it was common. It was not easy but she made sure the kids never missed a practice, game, or lesson. Mary made sure the family found time to get away, taking the kids camping throughout the northeast and Canada.
Family was the center of her world but she enjoyed her work as well. As a telephone operator for the “Ma Bell” phone company (prior to it becoming AT&T), she was the friendly voice on the line when someone dialed 411 and needed help with a question. Her love of the phone and joy in helping others made her perfect for this role. Her dedication shone through when she received an award at work for 25 years of service without missing a single day.
In retirement, she was a snowbird between Alfred, ME and Bradenton, FL where she welcomed grandchildren with extra sunscreen and pool noodles at the ready. They loved their time in Florida made sweeter by the friends that became their Florida family. Neighbors who stopped by daily, bingo games at the community center, and dinners out on the beach. Mary’s love of Florida was contagious and their family bond led to 2 of her sisters moving down to their same town to be close and frequent family visits.
Mary and Gerald kept themselves busy with family but also found time to enjoy traveling on cruises, trips to casinos, and tours abroad. No trip was complete without proudly finding a great deal on a new piece of jewelry or winning some money at a casino. Closer to home, they were actively involved in the local theater where Mary’s social personality shined as a volunteer usher.
As a member of the Elks Emblem Club, she gave back to the community and supported the many projects they were involved in. Through the Elks, Mary also was a regular at weekly Bingo nights and would happily welcome new players with a friendly face and extra bingo marker.
In her later years, you could always count on her talking on the phone, reading a book, or watching her beloved Red Sox when you stopped by to visit.
