Martha Frances Nutting Roberts
Martha N. Roberts, our beloved neighbor and friend, our eldest resident at age 108, has entered into eternal rest on December 21, 2021. She is welcomed home by her family and many friends.
Martha was born at home on May 19, 1913, the eldest of three children born to Albion H. and Mildred M. (Ferguson) Nutting, Jr.
She graduated as Salutatorian of Alfred High School in 1930 and from Gorham Normal School in 1932.
On February 3, 1934, Martha married Henry Eugene Roberts and welcomed into their hearts and home three children, Joanne, Betsy, and David. She spent many years as a substitute teacher and taught Sunday School at Alfred Parish Church.
Mrs. Roberts was first to become the director of the Parsons Memorial Library, which was held by her grandmother Florence Nutting, and served 37 years. She also volunteered thereafter and was one of the charter members of Friends of the Library.
Martha possessed a sharp memory of Alfred events and was the person to see when you were inquiring about Alfred’s history, residents, and community. Mrs. Roberts was a blessing and cherished friend.
Martha was predeceased by both parents, her husband, her daughter Joanne R. vanSambeek and her son, David H. Roberts, her sister Marion E. Nutting and brother Everett R. Nutting.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy) Roberts and three special nephews, Glenn, Todd and Scott Nutting and their families.
Martha’s daughter Betsy would like to share these two poems she wrote for her.
“I can’t believe that you are gone- That we’ll see you no more,
You should be walking down the street or coming through the door.
So many years when you were there – I thought they’d never end-
But when they did, it left a hole that only God can mend!”
“One more star in the sky tonight, An old friend died today –
The moon beams down and says it’s all right – You’ll all be together some day.
The big dipper holds a world full of love and sprinkles a heart full each night –
Memories to hold, Stories retold – Together they help make life seem right”
A private graveside service will be held in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred.
