Laura Elizabeth (Betty) Ghidoni passed away peacefully at Summer Commons in Sanford, Maine on January 1, 2022. She was born on August 29, 1933, the ninth of nineteen children born to Roscoe and Gladys (Adams) Hussey, on the family farm in Alfred.

She married Walter Earl Ghidoni in 1954. In the winter of 1955, they drove cross-country to obtain winter employment in Santa Paula, CA, pulling into an underpass when encountering a tornado and driving across the Hoover Dam.

Betty worked at Sprague Electric and Maine Stay Nursing Home but spent most of her time as a babysitter for many local children including her niece Robyn Courtois Colby. Widowed as a young woman, she raised three sons on her own. She enjoyed her extensive flower gardens and feeding and watching the birds. She spent time with her cousin Nora Foster going out to enjoy country music especially Conway Twitty and Charlie Pride. She was well known for her strong spirit and love of children.

She was predeceased by her husband Earl (1971), son Richard (2017), longtime companion Sam Mathieu (2002), and good friend Leo Hamel (2015); sisters: Caroline and Mary Hussey, Lucille Main, and Pauline Burgess; bothers: Carroll, Sumner, Arthur, Pete, Elwyn, and Wilbur Hussey.

Two sons survive her: Anthony and wife Joanne, and Daniel and wife Kelly; three grandchildren, two great grandchildren; sisters Mabel Stearns, Cora Carlson, Phyllis Courtois, and Roberta Kerrigan, niece Nancy Hussey, brothers Bob, Tom, Sam, and Nelson Hussey, and forty-three nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Sunday, January 9, 2022 from 1 – 3 p.m. at the Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak St., in Alfred. We kindly ask that everyone wear a mask inside the home.
